We talk to Rockley College student Connor Bastian

Former Lytchett Minster student, Connor Bastian, joined Rockley College on the Level 2 Diploma in Sport (Outdoors). Now in his 3rd year, he is currently working at Buddens Activity Centre throughout the summer. The staff have observed that not only has he made huge academic progress, but he is also developed into a popular and hugely likeable member of the Rockley team.

Why the Level 2 & 3 Diploma course?

I left school without the qualifications I needed, however Rockley offered me a GCSE resit alongside the Level 2 course.

What made you choose to study at Rockley rather than stay at your school sixth form or go to a bigger college?

I wanted to get out onto the water and be near the coast whilst studying and Rockley College provided this. It seemed to be much more exciting compared to being in a classroom each week.

What do you like about studying at Rockley?

I like the relationship between instructor and students as it is a professional, yet more relaxed relationship than that with a lecturer or teacher.

Any wise words?

Learn how to switch into work mode from coming off the water - work can pile up faster than expect if you are not ‘on it!’

What are your dreams and aspirations or your future career plans and goals?

Short term I would like to instruct - long term I don’t really know yet!

Would you recommend studying your course to other students and why?

If a student is a more practical learner, they will enjoy the course more than a student who works best through reading and writing.

Is there a particular staff member that has inspired you at Rockley and why?

Matt – he’s very passionate about watersports which makes me more motivated to participate.
