This year’s Women in Sport Week sees a host of international women’s sporting events taking place, including the Women’s Cricket and Rugby World Cups (taking place in the UK and Ireland) and the Women’s European Football and Hockey championships, ensuring 2017 is set to be one of the greatest years yet for elite women’s sport.

The Rockley team is hugely passionate about promoting sailing and watersports to everyone. The Management team is led by avid sailor and sportswoman, Pip Woods Rockley MD with the team made up of mostly female members who love, running, cycling and windsurfing.

While it has been noticed that there are fewer young girls sailing than boys Rockley instructors, across the five centres in the UK and France are an equal ratio of male/female RYA qualified and the very popular Rockley BTEC Level 3 Sport has an even take up.

Women in Sport Week 2017Tracey Crouch, Minister for Sport said: “We want more women and girls to get involved in sport and enjoy the huge benefits that being active brings to their lives.

“Women’s Sport Week is a fantastic campaign that encourages more women to try out a new sport or physical activity and celebrates the amazing achievements of our female athletes, coaches and volunteers. With a number of major events taking place, 2017 is a big year for women’s sport and I know that the nation will be right behind our inspirational female stars.”

Women Who Sail

Women in Sport Week 2017Sam Davies, skipper of the all-female Team SCA Volvo Ocean 2014-2015 team and experienced single-handed ocean racer, has announced she is returning to IMOCA racing. The Round Britain speed record holder, Sam will be at the start line for this year’s Transat Jacques Vabre and has not ruled out a return to the Vendee Globe in 2020.

“This is a great opportunity for women’s sailing and it is the right time to do it with the change in the Volvo Ocean Race rule. With the top-level coaching structure and technical team that is in place, this will help to fast-track our steep learning curve. I really believe we have the opportunity to achieve some amazing results in the next race.”
