We talk to year 1 BTEC student, Drew

Seven months in to their first year of the BTEC Level 3 Sport (Outdoor Adventure) we catch up with Drew to find out how he's getting on.

Body Image

While joining the BTEC students on their NCS beach clean in February, it was the perfect opportunity to catch up with a few year one students to see how they are getting on with their course so far. The BTEC teachers had suggested we speak to the ambitious Drew.

Sailing ambitions

During our chat with Drew we realised that he is a refreshingly driven and determined young man who is in no doubt that he will pass at the end of his two years with a double distinction! He then intends to pursue a career in competitive sailing. Already an avid sailor, Drew competes in Laser Radial National Events and is currently training at Lymington for the Worlds which take place in Canada in the next few months.

Drew completed his GCSE’s at Twynham School and while he had the grades to pursue his A-Levels, he knew that it just wasn’t for him. An energetic and focused individual he was very aware that joining a course that combined practical and coursework would allow him to succeed and enjoy the next two years of education. He said; “I can get bored easily so really wanted a course with a practical element. I’m glad I’ve chosen this course – I’m not sure I could have coped with A-Levels.” With the support of both his parents he applied and gained a place on the Rockley BTEC Level 3 Sport (Outdoor Adventure).

The good and the challenging

Like fellow student Amelia, Drew really enjoyed the first week in France which allowed him to get to know the other BTEC year 1s on the course. He said; “I loved the first week of staff training in France and so far, the course is great. I’m looking forward to the summer where we’ll be doing even more outdoor activities.”

It was questioned whether the fact that he was clearly an already competent sailor meant things were too easy or he got bored during the on-water sessions. On the contrary, he relishes the fact the he sails different dinghies and takes part in a variety of activities such as windsurfing and kayaking in constantly changing conditions – all of which he admitted can prove to be challenging. He’s also more than ready to help any of his fellow students should the opportunity arise.

When he was asked about any difficult parts of the course, he said completing the coursework in the time given can be an issue. While he has complete confidence in his ability to actually do the work, it’s his time management he needs to work on. For someone who spends a lot of time on the water outside of College, he sees this as another challenge and life skill he will undoubtedly conquer!

What his peers have to say

Speaking to Josh Banner, Rockley’s BTEC Practical Tutor, he commented: “Drew is a very driven individual who has great core ability. I have no doubt he’ll go far”

We look forward to catching up with Drew in the weeks and months to come to see how he’s progressing.
