We catch up with second year student Megan, about life at Rockley College

We catch up with second year student Megan, about life on Rockley's Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoors) course. Currently working in her spare time locally for a watersports company and buzzing off the back of recently passing both her RYA Windsurf and Dinghy Instructor courses, we find out what made her choose Rockley College and how things are going so far......

Why did you choose to study the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoors)?
I didn't enjoy learning in a typical classroom environment and wanted a change of scenery. I knew i enjoyed being outside and on the water and thought studying a course which is primarily practical based was the best option for me.

What made you choose to study at Rockley rather than stay at your school sixth form or go to a bigger college?
I worked with some previous students who had studied at Rockley and talking to them about their experience really sold me on choosing to study the course. I hadn't seen another course like Rockley that offered a mix of practical and classroom work. I knew that i wanted to work in the water sports industry so that i could instruct on the water in different locations abroad.

What are your favourite bits about the course?
I enjoy the learning environment at Rockley. All of the teachers and instructors are super friendly and approachable which makes being at college more enjoyable. My favourite part of the course is definitely being on practical sessions on the water, especially when the weather is nice.

What words of wisdom do you have for any future students?
Get involved in as much as possible. The more effort you put into practical sessions and optional days, the more likely you are to get your qualifications.

What are your dreams and aspirations / your future career plans and goals?
I want to travel to places like Bali and Australia, hopefully being able to teach water sports to local communities. I want to experience living in different parts of the world and to see how different people live. I want to get out of my comfort zone and meet new people through travelling and working in different places.

Would you recommend studying your course to other students and why?
Yes, choosing Rockley over other sixth form and colleges is the best decision I've made. I didn't know exactly what I wanted to study but being at Rockley has made me realise that I love learning new skills on the water and that I want to teach watersports in the future.

Is there a particular staff member that has inspired you at Rockley and why?
Megan is an inspiration to me because she too started at Rockley as a student, has since worked her way up in the company and is now an instructor/teacher for the students at Rockley.

Let’s get centre specific! >

When it comes to residential activity trips for young people, there is generally a ‘top 5’ when it comes to what group leaders are looking for. Amongst safety, types of activities and company reputation is always centre and location. This is why, as a company, when choosing an activity centre, the location is at the forefront of our decision-making. Our centres have been specifically selected for their capacity to offer a range of fantastic activities and enhance both the pupil and group leader adventure experience.
