Team Rockley: Rachel Glendening Back with Us

Geography Teacher and ex-Rockley instructor Rachel Glendening has been with us for the summer working back on the water at our new Bartley, Birmingham Centre.

Rachel is currently studying for her Masters degree in Teaching and has achieved several watersports qualifications including RYA Senior Instructor, RYA Windsurfng Instructor, RYA Powerboat Instructor with endorsements for multihulls and racing.

Ahead of her last week with us we sat down for a chat to find out what lured her back to the Rockley team.

I first worked for Rockley in 2013 and also did a season in 2017. I have worked at two different centres in France: La Rive and Azu'Rivage and I have completed a lot of my watersports instructor courses at Rockley Point so I also know the centre there well.

I currently work as a secondary school geography teacher at Hillcrest School in Birmingham. I studied geography at Leeds University and was heavily involved in the sailing and windsurfing societies there. Since moving to Birmingham I have become a keen paddleboarder and I've particularly enjoyed playing SUP Polo. I am also a member at Bartley Sailing Club where I have a Laser.

I've done several fantastic seasons both abroad and in the UK, but I always seem to get drawn back to Rockley. Since I first worked at Rockley I've lived in three different cities for university and work, and each time I have always met ex-Rockley staff - it's like a big community!

We look forward to seeing Rachel again on the water with us!

Rob’s blog - Moving from a small pond to a big sea: Expanding your competitive horizons >

Like most sports, in sailing there always feels like there is a home field advantage. We may not have the crowd cheering us on – certainly not in my case – but familiarity with a venue or set of competitors helps create a confidence that you have a sense of what will happen, where the wind will shift or tide will flow, and the moves and counter moves of your competition. In fact knowing where you stand in the local pecking order can give a timely nudge to push forwards and establish the natural order or be comfortable that you have done well in your relative result.
