Success on the Water for Dorset School Games

For the third consecutive year Rockley, working in collaboration with Active Dorset, has hosted the sailing events at Rockley Poole Park for the Dorset School Games.

Body Image

Thirteen Dorset Schools took to the Poole Park lake waters as part of the Sainsbury’s national school sports campaign. This year’s Dorset School Games two-day event held across Thursday 30 June for Primary School students and Friday 1 July for Secondary School pupils saw 200 sailors get on the water taking part in 20 races.

The Dorset School Games, organised by active Dorset is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

Day one saw children from Lytchett, Baden Powell, Bournemouth Collegiate Prep, St. Martin’s, Bincombe Valley Primary and Talbot Heath schools compete in pairs racing with a teachers race before lunchtime. A very well sailed event by the children of Lytchett and a win for Mrs Cotterill saw them take the overall Primary School gold medal with Baden Powell and Bournemouth Collegiate Prep taking second and third place respectively.

As the nine Secondary school teams (Poole Grammar, All Saint's, Lytchett, Poole High, Bournemouth School for Girls, Wey Valley, Dorchester, Parkstone Grammar and Talbot Heath) took to the water on day two the wind picked up and provided great conditions for some excellent sailing on the lake. The grand final was won by Matthew of Poole Grammar, Oliver of Dorchester took second and Harry from All Saints sailed into third. With these final results the overall Secondary School gold medal went to Poole Grammar, silver to All Saints and Dorchester took the bronze. Full results below.

Congratulations to all sailors taking part in this year's games, we have really enjoyed it and the whole Rockley team is looking forward to seeing you all next year! When a weekly sailing session looks like a 'No Go' thanks to no wind...what's the alternative? Well it's certainly not to go home if Peter has anything to do with it!
