Sail through your GCSE PE with Rockley

Did you know… sailing and windsurfing have been reinstated to the GCSE PE activity list, following the Department of Education’s DfE 2018 public consultation. They are two of the 13 new activities that have been added set for the curriculum from September 2020.

So why not choose something different to the norm and bring your GCSE PE group to do a three to five day residential with Rockley? Your students will learn valuable new skills on the water, demonstrate a level of understanding and gain the evidence to prove it. These will count towards their course grades whilst broadening their horizons, making the most of their surroundings and creating lasting memories in a safe and fun environment.

Rockley are recognised by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association), AALA (Adventure Activities Licencing Authority) and LOTC (Learning Outside the Classroom), and as a well-established, experienced and well-equipped provider we will take the stress out of the teaching and assessment.

Expertise, experience and reputation

We have the expertise to teach and also assess students’ practical and theoretical skills with both single and double hander boats that students will learn to rig, helm, read wind conditions and control the boat using techniques such as tacking, gybing, speeding up, slowing down and sailing on different points of sail. By the end of their RYA sailing course they should be competent enough to sail a small single-handed dinghy around a triangular course.

Rockley will provide a support boat to facilitate filming your students, enabling you to get close enough to collect video evidence of the level of skill demonstrated by the students for marking and evidence purposes. We have numbered bibs so students can easily identifiable.

Stunning location

Situated in the beautiful Jurassic coast of Poole, Dorset, sailing will take place on beautiful Poole Harbour. The safety of Poole Harbour makes an ideal teaching environment meaning that we are able to adapt to the weather conditions, being able to support beginners and challenge the more competent to reach their potential.  (Google maps to show location)

Assessed skills and techniques would include aspects such as:

  • Rigging and launching a boat
  • Points of Sail: close haul (into the wind); reaching (wind on the beam); running (wind on the stern)
  • Changing direction (tacking and gybing)
  • Capsize deliberately and re-right boat and entry from the water

Not only this but as part of your package, you can take full advantage of our fully functioning classrooms in which you can follow up their practical sessions in the day with some evening theory/classroom work. As well as this, we can facilitate a programme of evening entertainment activities on our beach to keep the students active after dinner.

Your options

We can offer a variety of options; over week days and weekend options that can shortened or extended to suit your needs including gaining RYA courses and multi activity paddle sport options.

Please get in touch to chat through your requirements – we would be happy to help… call the schools team on 01202 677 272
