Great Learners are Determined

The Dorset School Games is coming back to Poole Park this June and for the fourth year running Rockley will provide the sailing events that encourage local school pupils to compete and achieve their personal best.

Learning to sail and taking part in watersports encourages children to interact positively with each other and to develop their personal and social skills so they can form new friendships and grow into confident individuals. It also helps to develop higher-level skills and can increase confidence, determination and independence, increasing communications and encouraging team support.

Determination to keep going!

Watch the video from the RYA to hear what Professor Bill Lucas says about those that are determined with a don't give up attitude.

The Dorset School Games strives to keep competitive sport at the heart of schools providing more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best. The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

Rob’s blog - Moving from a small pond to a big sea: Expanding your competitive horizons >

Like most sports, in sailing there always feels like there is a home field advantage. We may not have the crowd cheering us on – certainly not in my case – but familiarity with a venue or set of competitors helps create a confidence that you have a sense of what will happen, where the wind will shift or tide will flow, and the moves and counter moves of your competition. In fact knowing where you stand in the local pecking order can give a timely nudge to push forwards and establish the natural order or be comfortable that you have done well in your relative result.
