Why Rockley College?
I chose the extended diploma as I didn’t want just a strict sit down and study course so the mix with practical was a big thing. I also know that I want to work in the watersports and marine industry.

How did you find out about our education programme and what made you decide to study with Rockley?
I know Josh Gordon from sailing - his parents own Rockley. I decided to see if they offered courses after GCSE’s through their website.

Did you have any water experience prior to the course?
I’ve sailed  -  raced a Topper, Pico, RS Feva 500 and I also surf and paddleboard occasionally.

Were your parents happy with your choice of course given the sometimes negative perception of Diploma/BTEC courses?
My parents were happy I chose this as they know I love watersports. They wanted me to choose something I love.

What have been the highlights of the course so far?
I love the practical days and the optional days which means I can spend more time out on the water!

And the most challenging parts of the course so far?
So far, the most challenging part for me has been starting assignments! Once they are started, it is easy to carry on!

What is your favourite activity?
Definitely sailing.

There’s a lot in the news surrounding mental health in young people. How does this kind of teaching environment help to combat that?
The teaching environment helps create a positive attitude to learning and ensures students are happier. Also days off reduce stress as I can gain sleep and also complete finished course work.

What are your plans following the course?
I want to achieve the highest grade possible and also gain further RYA sailing/ powerboating qualifications.

"The course so far is more fun than I expected, one of the main reasons for this is that the teachers don’t treat you like children, whereas in younger years they do. There is also a good balance between practical, classroom work and time off."
