Apprentice Josh talks life at Rockley

Former Oak Academy student Josh had already been studying at Rockley College for three years before deciding to apply for the apprenticeship programme. Based at Buddens Activity Centre, we find out why he chose the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure) course in the first place and why he decided to stay on.

Why this course?

Because I didn’t really feel like I wanted to be stuck inside all day! I learn more by doing things so, having the opportunity to get out on the water every week was a real bonus. The balance of classroom work and being outdoors that this course and this college offered just really worked for me, plus being outside allows me to get rid of all my excess energy.

So now you arepart of the Rockley Apprenticeship Programme. What are your plans going forward?

I really want to be more of a skills-related instructor, and love the idea of teaching the next generation of Instructors. I want to pass on the knowledge and skills I have gained in sports such as kayaking, paddleboarding and canoeing as well as the climbing activities and encourage new students to develop their own skills and find their passion.

When you looked at an Apprenticeship course, why stay with Rockley?

This course had everything I needed so there was no need to go elsewhere - and with so much scope to develop my skills, it felt like the right choice.

A word about Josh from Buddens Centre Manager, Andy

"Josh is someone who, during his time with us, has really grown both personally and professionally; from a quiet individual to someone who is now really confident at delivering a high-quality session. His love for the outdoors is infectious, and he has a particular passion for paddlesports which is evident when he is instructing. However it’s not just this that sets Josh a part - he is hugely loved by all the staff, has a wicked sense of humour and has the natural ability to pick people up when they are down. He's a great individual to have as part of the Rockley Team!"
