Next Step

The traineeship is a structured programme specially designed to prepare you for the world of work as an Outdoor Instructor. This programme is split in to 3 areas:

Education – All of our trainees complete the Level 3 Diploma in Sport. This qualification covers 9 units and is all coursework based. It underpins all that you will do as an instructor, introducing you to such things as Principles of Outdoor Adventure, Waterbased Skills, Landbased Skills, Sports Leadership, Careers in Sport and Work Experience.

Practical Training – During the programme you will be introduced to range of waterbased and land based activities like Sailing, Windsurfing, Paddleboarding, Kayaking, Powerboating, Mountain Biking, Climbing, High Ropes, Archery, Team Building, Orienteering and Walking, to name just a few!

Work Experience – This is where you get to put in to practice all you’ve learnt and begin working as an instructor. You’ll be taught how each session is delivered and then have the opportunity to practice and learn by delivering your own sessions in a supportive environment. As you develop in experience, you’ll move from an assistant instructor to then being in full control of groups and leading our Rockley activities.

This programme is specifically designed for 18 year olds that are looking for something post Sixth Form and so you will need to be 18 years by 31st August and ready to start the programme in September.

We're looking for people with a passion for sport and outdoors and ideally you will share our Rockley values and beliefs, demonstrating a can-do attitude, and a desire to give it a go.

A personal skill level in water and land-based activities is not required as you will receive full training, but you will need a desire to work with young people and an interest in becoming an Outdoor Instructor and GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or above.

Our optional training programme allows you to up-skill and work towards a range of National Governing Body and in-house qualifications. We offer training in both water and land based activities which is free to all our learners and gives you the opportunity to develop as an instructor and prepare for a career in the outdoor industry.

Activities include: sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, powerboating, bell boating, raft building, high / low ropes, climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, walking, orienteering, rifle shooting, tunnelling, tomahawk throwing, archery, team building, expeditions, bushcraft and many more.

During the programme we will support you to get the skills and qualifications you need to secure a job, apprenticeship or further training in Outdoor Adventure. Our programme is specifically designed for students to move on to employment at Rockley as an Outdoor Instructor and as such Trainees will have the opportunity to apply for further opportunities at Rockley at the end of the programme. If you decide that’s not for you, support is still there with an exit interview and guidance to find what’s your Next Step.

The Traineeship offers huge opportunity in finding employment in the outdoor and marine industry both in the UK and abroad. Alternatively, you may wish to continue your studies in sport at university or maybe complete an apprenticeship. Click here for details of our Level 3 Outdoor Activity Apprenticeship programme.
